On two classes of nearly binary matroids

چکیده
We give an excluded-minor characterization for the class of matroids M in which M\e or M/e is binary for all e in E(M). This class is closely related to the class of matroids in which every member is binary or can be obtained from a binary matroid by relaxing a circuithyperplane. We also provide an excluded-minor characterization for the second class.

On the Excluded Minors for the Matroids That Are Either Binary or Ternary
The classes of binary and ternary matroids are both relatively well understood as is their intersection, the class of regular matroids. This paper considers the union M of the classes of binary and ternary matroids. M is a minor-closed class and the focus of the paper is on determining its set of excluded minors. It is conjectured here that this set of excluded minors unique matroids that are o...
متن کاملMatroid union - Graphic? Binary? Neither?
Graphic matroids form one of the most significant classes in matroid theory. When introducing matroids, Whitney concentrated on relations to graphs. The definition of some basic operations like deletion, contraction and direct sum were straightforward generalizations of the respective concepts in graph theory. Most matroid classes, for example those of binary, regular or graphic matroids, are c...
متن کاملThe Binary Matroids with No 4-wheel Minor
The cycle matroids of wheels are the fundamental building blocks for the class of binary matroids. Brylawski has shown that a binary matroid has no minor isomorphic to the rank-3 wheel M(1f3) if and only if it is a series-parallel network. In this paper we characterize the binary matroids with no minor isomorphic to M (if;.). This characterization is used to solve the critical problem for this ...
متن کاملExcluding Kuratowski graphs and their duals from binary matroids
We consider various applications of our characterization of the internally 4-connected binary matroids with no M(K3,3)-minor. In particular, we characterize the internally 4-connected members of those classes of binary matroids produced by excluding any collection of cycle and bond matroids of K3,3 and K5, as long as that collection contains either M(K3,3) or M ∗(K3,3). We also present polynomi...
متن کاملConsequences of the Brylawski-Lucas Theorem for Binary Matroids
The principal theme of the present paper is to consider isomorphism classes of binary matroids as orbits of a suitable group action . This interpretation is based on a theorem of Brylawski – Lucas . A refinement of the Burnside Lemma is used in order to enumerate these orbits . Ternary matroids are dealt with in much the same way (Section 2) . Counting regular matroids is more dif ficult , but ...
